Portuguese equestrian art recognized as intangible Cultural Heritage by UNESCO
Portuguese Equestrian Art has been officially designated as Intangible Cultural Heritage of Humanity by the United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization (UNESCO).
The announcement was made during the organization’s most recent committee meeting.
A long journey to cultural preservation
The path to this recognition began in 2015, resulting from a partnership between the Portuguese Association of Purebred Lusitano Breeders, Parques de Sintra — which manages the Portuguese School of Equestrian Art — and the Municipality of Golegã. This international acknowledgment follows the inclusion of Portuguese Equestrian Art in the National Inventory of Intangible Cultural Heritage in 2021.
Strategies to safeguard the tradition
The proponents of the application have outlined several measures to ensure the preservation of this centuries-old practice.
Key initiatives include the creation of a research center linked to the D. Diogo de Bragança Equestrian Library at the National Palace of Queluz, strengthening the Portuguese School of Equestrian Art as a reference institution for equestrian education, and integrating equestrianism into school curricula through a pilot project already in place in Golegã.
Harmony between rider and horse
At the heart of Portuguese Equestrian Art lies the quest for perfect harmony between horse and rider, manifesting in two inseparable forms: a popular and an erudite expression.
This connection is described in the UNESCO application as a balance of functionality and artistry, with riders employing specific techniques to achieve the horse’s voluntary cooperation, always respecting the animal.
A unique tradition gaining global recognition
This international recognition highlights the unique characteristics of Portuguese Equestrian Art, such as the rider’s position in the saddle, traditional attire, and distinctive tack. Passed down through generations, this equestrian knowledge is considered one of the most refined and harmonious cultural expressions of Portugal.
With this acknowledgment, Portugal reaffirms its role as a guardian of one of the world’s most elegant equestrian traditions, ensuring its legacy endures for future generations.
