Old Lisbon: Living History between Alfama and Baixa

The tour starts at Praça D. Pedro IV, better known as Rossio, one of the most emblematic places in the city, the stage of historical events and cultural demonstrations and a meeting point for Lisbon residents over the centuries. Surrounded by traditional cafés, theatres and buildings with artistic pavements, it is the ideal starting point for a journey into the city’s past. We continue through the streets of Baixa Pombalina, admiring its neoclassical architecture, to Lisbon Cathedral (Sé), the oldest religious building in the city. Here we visit the interior, exploring its thousand-year history, marked by reconstructions, archaeological finds and an enveloping spiritual atmosphere. We continue towards São Jorge Castle, where we will make an outside stop by the entrance to learn about its strategic importance in the history of Lisbon and enjoy the panoramic views over the city. The next stop is the famous Portas do Sol Viewpoint, from where you can see the traditional Alfama neighbourhood and the Tagus, one of the city’s living postcards. Going down through Alfama, we pass the Church of São Miguel, small but striking, a symbol of the neighbourhood’s popular religiosity. We continue to Largo do Chafariz de Dentro, home to one of the oldest public fountains in the city, linked to the daily life of Lisbon in times past. The route continues past the remarkable Casa dos Bicos, a Renaissance-style building with a carved stone façade, now the headquarters of the José Saramago Foundation. Here, the guide will give historical and cultural context about the building and its connection to the Portuguese Nobel Prize winner in Literature. The tour ends at the majestic Praça do Comércio (Terreiro do Paço), a symbol of royal power and of the Lisbon rebuilt after the 1755 earthquake. An open space on the Tagus, perfect for relaxing or extending the visit independently. This route, designed for those who want to explore historic Lisbon on foot, is a true journey through time, among enchanting alleys, unforgettable views and living heritage.
