Parque do Fontelo

The green heart of Viseu, in the old estate of the bishops.

The Parque do Fontelo in Viseu

The Parque do Fontelo, in Viseu, is the green heart of the city: avenues of old trees, lawns and gardens around the buildings of the old estate that became the great park of Viseu. Between its woods and its open fields, the park is the place of the walks of the city — and one of the most peaceful corners of the centre of Portugal.

The park

The park was born from the old estate of the bishops of Viseu, at the gates of the city, and grew through the centuries into a landscape of avenues, woods and gardens, with its lakes, its sports fields and its paths among the great trees. Around the park stand the old buildings of the estate and, beyond the trees, the city and the hills of the Beira.

What to see

  • The avenues and the great trees of the old estate.
  • The lawns and gardens of the park.
  • The buildings of the historic estate around the park.
  • The quiet paths among the woods, at the gates of the city.

Visiting

The park is in Viseu, within a short walk of the centre of the city, and is open through the year for walks and for the events that take place among its trees; the conditions and programmes follow the official information of the municipality.

Nearby

The city of Viseu and its Museu Nacional Grão Vasco are the natural companions of a day in the park.
