During the Middle Ages, Esposende continued to grow as a small fishing village. In 1572, it was elevated to the status of a town by decree of King D. Sebasti\u00e3o, recognizing the economic importance of fishing and shipbuilding in the region. The port of Esposende played a central role in the export of agricultural products and salt. It was also significant in cod fishing.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

In the 19th century, Esposende became an important center for maritime trade. However, the construction of larger ports nearby led to a decline in this activity. Nevertheless, the city maintained its connection to the sea and fishing. These still play an important role in the local economy today.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

In 1993, Esposende was elevated to city status. Today, this town in the Braga district is known for its beaches, natural and historical heritage, making it a popular destination for beach and cultural tourism.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
