Once a quiet fishing and farming community, it has become one of the most sought-after coastal destinations in Portugal \u2014 without losing its sandy streets and slow rhythm.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">History and identity<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The village grew up on the edge of the great Herdade da Comporta, where rice has been grown for generations and fishing boats still work the coast. Its dunes, rice paddies and wooden boardwalks have shaped its landscape for centuries.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">What to see and do<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>The beaches and dunes, stretching south along the coast.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>The rice fields and the wooden walkways over the paddies.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>The village itself, with its whitewashed houses and shops.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>The sunset over the Sado estuary and the Atlantic.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Gastronomy and traditions<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Comporta is known for its rice \u2014 served with fish and seafood from the coast \u2014 and for the simple cooking of the Alentejo litoral. Its restaurants and the village market keep the flavours of the estuary.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Nearby<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The river town of <a href=\"https:\/\/realdreams.pt\/nl\/attractions-to-visit\/regions-of-portugal\/alentejo-region\/alcacer-do-sal\/\" rel=\"noopener\">Alc\u00e1cer do Sal<\/a>, with its castle over the Sado, is a short drive inland.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Visiting Comporta<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Comporta is on the Alentejo coast, about 120 kilometres south of Lisbon, reached by road.
