Planted in the 1880s, they form the oldest \u2014 and one of the last \u2014 tea estates of Europe, with a factory that still works with the machines of its early days on the island.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">History and character<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Tea came to the Azores in the nineteenth century, when the orange trade declined and the islanders looked for new crops. The Gorreana estate was planted in 1883 and became the heart of Azorean tea, growing the plants of the Camellia sinensis in the island&#8217;s mild, humid climate \u2014 the same conditions that give the tea of Gorreana its character today.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">What to discover<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>The tea fields, sweeping across the hills above the sea.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>The factory, with its historic machinery and the smell of drying tea.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>The tastings of black and green Azorean tea.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>The north coast landscapes around the estate, between Maia and S\u00e3o Br\u00e1s.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Visiting<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The estate is on the north coast of S\u00e3o Miguel, in the municipality of Ribeira Grande, reached by road.
