Hundreds of girls carry the tabuleiros on their heads \u2014 tall trays crowned with bread and flowers \u2014 and the whole city, from the castle to the river, is dressed in paper flowers.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">History and traditions<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The festival grew from the old celebrations of the Holy Spirit, celebrated in Tomar since the Middle Ages, in which the community shared the harvest and the offerings of the season.
