Built between six and five thousand years ago, it is older than the pyramids of Egypt.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">The giant of the \u00c9vora megaliths<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The dolmen belongs to the extraordinary megalithic landscape around \u00c9vora \u2014 the same culture that raised the <a href=\"https:\/\/realdreams.pt\/nl\/attractions-to-visit\/regions-of-portugal\/alentejo-region\/cromeleque-dos-almendres\/\">Cromeleque dos Almendres<\/a>, the largest stone circle in the peninsula, a few kilometres away. Excavated in the 1960s, Zambujeiro yielded necklaces, schist idols, copper tools and decorated vessels that are now in the museum of <a href=\"https:\/\/realdreams.pt\/nl\/attractions-to-visit\/regions-of-portugal\/alentejo-region\/evora\/\">\u00c9vora<\/a>; its huge menhir, covered in cup marks, lies fallen at the entrance, and the broken capstone of the chamber rests where it fell. A protective metal shell now shields the stones from the weather, and in 2020 the monument received a special protection zone that covers the surrounding fields \u2014 the dolmen standing alone in farmland, as it has for five millennia.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">What to see<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>The seven giant pillars of the chamber<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>The corridor of sixteen standing stones<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>The fallen menhir with its cup marks<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>The mound in which the tomb was buried<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>The megalithic landscape all around \u00c9vora<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Practical information<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The dolmen stands near Valverde, about 12 kilometres from \u00c9vora by the road to Montemor-o-Novo. It is a National Monument, free to visit and signposted from Valverde; the visit takes fifteen minutes.
