Museu Militar de Elvas
A military museum in Elvas, in the heart of the fortified border town, with collections on Portugal’s defensive history.

Elvas is one of the most heavily fortified towns in Europe, and its military museum tells the story of the border that it was built to defend. Weapons, uniforms, documents and models illustrate centuries of military engineering and the town’s role in Portugal’s wars with Spain.
A fortified border town
The fortifications of Elvas, including the enormous Forte da Graça and the aqueduct of Amoreira, are listed by UNESCO as World Heritage. The military museum, installed in the town, complements a visit to those monuments with collections that explain how they were used and why they mattered.
What to see
- Weapons, uniforms and equipment from several centuries.
- Documents, maps and models of the town’s fortifications.
- The military history of the Portuguese-Spanish border.
- Easy access to the Forte da Graça and the town’s other monuments.
Visiting the museum
