Lagoa de Óbidos

A coastal lagoon between Óbidos and Foz do Arelho, with quiet water, birds and a long Atlantic beach.

The Óbidos lagoon

Between the walled town of Óbidos and the Atlantic, the Lagoa de Óbidos is a wide coastal lagoon connected to the sea by a narrow channel. Its calm water, its birds and the long beach at Foz do Arelho make it one of the most pleasant natural settings in central Portugal.

A lagoon by the sea

The lagoon is fed by rivers and streams and opens to the ocean at Foz do Arelho, where the beach stretches along the coast. Its shores are a mix of reeds, farmland and small villages, and the water is an important habitat for birds and fish.

What to see and do

  • The lagoon itself, with its quiet water and views towards Óbidos.
  • The beach at Foz do Arelho, where the lagoon meets the ocean.
  • Birdwatching along the shores and in the surrounding wetlands.
  • Water sports, including sailing and windsurfing, where conditions allow.

Visiting the lagoon

The lagoon lies between Óbidos and Foz do Arelho, in central Portugal, reached by road. Access to the shores is free; for water sports and any seasonal restrictions, check locally before your visit.
