Monsanto
A historic village built among giant granite boulders in the Beira Interior, one of Portugal’s most remarkable places.

Monsanto is unlike any other village in Portugal. Its houses are built among and sometimes beneath enormous granite boulders, on a hillside crowned by a castle, in the wide landscape of the Beira Interior. It is one of the historic villages of Portugal and one of the country’s most photographed places.
A village among the boulders
The hill has been occupied since prehistoric times, and the castle played a part in the wars of the twelfth and thirteenth centuries. The village grew up between the rocks, and its people have long built their houses into the boulders rather than around them, creating streets that seem carved from the mountain.
What to see
- The castle and its walls, at the top of the village.
- Houses built under and between the granite boulders.
- Views over the plain and the surrounding historic villages.
- The Romanesque church and the village’s narrow streets.
