Museu de Vista Alegre
Portugal’s first porcelain factory, founded in 1824 at Ílhavo: museum, hand-painting workshop, palace and baroque chapel.

Portugal’s first porcelain factory still works where it began in 1824, beside the ria at Ílhavo: the Vista Alegre complex is a factory, a museum, a chapel and a whole village of its own, where two centuries of Portuguese porcelain — from royal dinner services to modern design — can be followed room by room.
From royal licence to national treasure
The factory was founded by José Ferreira Pinto Basto on the Quinta da Ermida, with a royal licence granted on 1 July 1824, and was producing hard-paste porcelain within a decade — the first in the Iberian peninsula. The museum, inaugurated in 1964 and expanded in 2017, shows some six thousand square metres of porcelain, glass, drawings and tools, and on weekdays the guided route extends into the workshops where painters still work by hand. The estate also keeps its baroque chapel of Nossa Senhora da Penha de França, a National Monument, and the palace of the Pinto Basto family. The factory sits minutes from the cod-fishing heritage of the Santo André museum ship and the striped houses of Costa Nova.
