Inside the SEA LIFE Porto aquarium

On the waterfront of Foz do Douro, beside the old Castle of Queijo, the SEA LIFE Porto opens a window into the life of the Atlantic. In its halls, more than thirty aquariums — from the shores of the Portuguese coast to the depths of the ocean — lead visitors through the marine world of the north of Portugal, ending in the great ocean tunnel where rays and sharks cross overhead.

The aquarium

The SEA LIFE Porto opened in 2009 and is part of the international SEA LIFE network, whose aquariums work on the conservation of the seas and on the rescue and rehabilitation of marine animals. The visit follows the water from the coast to the open ocean: the rock pools and coastal tanks, the seahorses and the creatures of the reefs, and the great central tank with its tunnel, crossed by rays, sharks and groupers — with the care of the seas and the work of the network presented along the way.

What to see

  • The ocean tunnel, with rays and sharks crossing overhead.
  • The coastal tanks and the life of the Portuguese shore.
  • The seahorses and the small creatures of the reefs.
  • The conservation and rescue work presented by the aquarium.

Visiting

The aquarium is at the Foz do Douro, on the coast of Porto, reached by bus and by car along the river until it meets the sea; the times and tickets are published by the aquarium, and the visit, of around two hours, combines well with a walk along the Foz waterfront and its beaches.

Nearby

In the western part of the city, the Jardim Botânico do Porto oraz Muzeum Serralves are the green and artistic complements of a day by the sea.
