Its cool mountain air, its thermal springs and its views over the coast make it a favourite escape, and the surrounding hills are full of walking trails.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">History and identity<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The town grew up in the mountains, sheltered from the coast, and its spa at Caldas de Monchique has been used since Roman times. The surrounding forests, with their cork oaks and pines, have shaped the life of the community for centuries.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">What to see and do<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>The Serra de Monchique, with its trails and viewpoints.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>The town&#8217;s streets and its small church.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>The spa at Caldas de Monchique.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>The views over the coast, from the heights of F\u00f3ia and Picota.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Gastronomy and traditions<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Monchique is known for its medronho \u2014 a spirit distilled from the fruit of the strawberry tree \u2014 and for the mountain cuisine of the Algarve, with its smoked meats and honey. The town&#8217;s festivals are part of the calendar of the serra.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Visiting Monchique<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Monchique is in the western Algarve, about 20 kilometres inland from Portim\u00e3o, reached by road.
