Its chapel above the sea, its islet and its green surroundings make it a memorable stop in the Azores.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">History and identity<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Founded in the fifteenth century, Vila Franca do Campo was the capital of S\u00e3o Miguel until a devastating earthquake in 1522. The town was rebuilt, and its chapel of Nossa Senhora da Paz, on a hill above the coast, has become one of the best-known monuments of the Azores.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">What to see and do<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>The chapel of Nossa Senhora da Paz, with its staircase and views.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>The islet of Vila Franca, a volcanic crater in the sea.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>The historic centre, with its churches and old houses.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>The coast and the green landscapes of the south of S\u00e3o Miguel.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Gastronomy and traditions<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The town is known for its seafood and for the produce of S\u00e3o Miguel, including pineapple and tea from the island&#8217;s plantations. Its festivals, with their processions and music, are part of the Azorean calendar.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Visiting Vila Franca do Campo<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Vila Franca do Campo is on the south coast of S\u00e3o Miguel, about 25 kilometres from Ponta Delgada, reached by road.
