Its cathedral and its old town are among the finest in the region, and its museum of Renaissance painting holds one of the great collections of Portuguese art.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">History and identity<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Viseu has Roman origins and became an important city in the Middle Ages, seat of a bishopric and of a royal court at times.
