Lisbon’s most beautiful lift rises 45 metres through a lacework tower of neo-gothic iron, carrying passengers from the shopping streets of the Baixa to the heights of Largo do Carmo. The Elevador de Santa Justa opened in 1902 and remains, more than a century later, both public transport and one of the city’s favourite monuments.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Iron, steam and electric light<\/h2>\n\n\n\n

The tower was designed by Raoul Mesnier du Ponsard, the Portuguese engineer whose studies and work connected him to the school of Gustave Eiffel, and it opened on 10 July 1902 \u2014 the same year as the city’s electric trams. Its vehicles first climbed on steam power, converted to electricity in 1907. Ornate ironwork covers the whole structure, including the walkway at the top that links the lift to Largo do Carmo, beside the roofless Carmo Convent and its archaeological museum<\/a>. At the summit, a small spiral staircase leads to the viewing terrace \u2014 one of the finest balconies over Baixa, Rossio and the river, within earshot of the bells of S\u00e3o Roque<\/a>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
