Set on the northern shore of the Sado River estuary and framed by the majestic Arrábida mountain range, Setúbal is a vibrant coastal city that blends natural beauty, cultural heritage, and maritime tradition. Just an hour south of Lisbon, it has become a cherished destination for those seeking authentic Portuguese charm and extraordinary outdoor experiences.

One of Setúbal’s most remarkable and unique treasures is its resident population of bottlenose dolphins (Tursiops truncatus) — one of the very few in Europe that lives in a river estuary all year round. These dolphins inhabit the calm, nutrient-rich waters of the Sado Estuary, and can often be seen swimming, playing, and feeding close to the boat tours that leave from the city’s harbor.

Setúbal has embraced these incredible creatures as part of its identity. Dolphin-watching tours are a must-do experience for visitors, offering a respectful and unforgettable encounter with wildlife in its natural habitat — all set against the breathtaking backdrop of the Arrábida Natural Park, with its turquoise waters and limestone cliffs.

Beyond the dolphins, Setúbal also offers a thriving food scene (especially known for its fresh seafood and choco frito), a lively waterfront, traditional markets, and easy access to some of the country’s most beautiful beaches, such as Galápos and Portinho da Arrábida.

Whether you come for nature, gastronomy, or culture, Setúbal offers an authentic coastal experience — made truly special by the magical presence of its wild dolphins.
