Museu de Portimão
An award-winning museum of industry, fishing and daily life, in a restored nineteenth-century fish-canning factory in Portimão.

The Museu de Portimao occupies a restored nineteenth-century fish-canning factory on the town’s riverside, where the story of the Algarve’s fishing industry is told through the building itself. Machinery, photographs and personal objects bring the working life of the factory and the community back to the visitor.
From factory to museum
The municipality acquired the former Sao Francisco fish-canning factory in 1996 to preserve an important part of Portimao’s industrial and maritime history, and the museum opened in the converted building in 2008. Its displays cover the origins and evolution of the community, its territory and its relationship with the river and the sea.
