Sé de Viseu
Viseu’s cathedral, with a Romanesque tower, a vaulted interior and the art of Grão Vasco nearby.

At the top of the old city of Viseu, the cathedral keeps the memory of eight centuries of building — from the Romanesque tower to the great vaulted nave. Its chapter house preserves paintings from the golden age of Portuguese art, and the cathedral remains the heart of the city’s religious life.
History and character
Begun in the twelfth and thirteenth centuries, the cathedral was rebuilt and enriched in the sixteenth and seventeenth, when the interior received its high vaults and its gilded altars. Its Romanesque tower is the oldest part, and the paintings once made for its altars are among the treasures of the city.
What to see
- The Romanesque tower, above the old city.
- The nave and its great vaults, with gilded retables.

Visiting
The cathedral is in the historic centre of Viseu, reached on foot from the main squares. It remains an active place of worship: visits are welcome outside the hours of Mass, and access may be limited during celebrations.
Nearby
O Museu Nacional Grão Vasco stands beside the cathedral, and the streets of Viseu lead down to the city’s gardens and old gates.
