Casa das Histórias Paula Rego
A museum in Cascais devoted to the artist Paula Rego, in a striking building by Eduardo Souto de Moura.

The Casa das Histórias Paula Rego is devoted to the work of Paula Rego (1935-2022), one of Portugal’s best-known artists, in a building as distinctive as the paintings it holds. Designed by the Pritzker Prize-winning architect Eduardo Souto de Moura, its two terracotta pyramid towers echo the chimneys of the Pena Palace in nearby Sintra.
A house for Paula Rego’s stories
Paula Rego chose the architect herself, and the museum opened in Cascais in 2009 as a place to show her work in depth. Its galleries present paintings, drawings and prints from across her career, alongside works by her husband, the painter Victor Willing, and a programme of temporary exhibitions.
What to see
- Paintings, drawings and prints by Paula Rego, from her early work to her late pastels.
- Works by Victor Willing.
- Models and preparatory material used by the artist.
- The building itself, with its red concrete towers, garden and auditorium.
