Museu do Oriente
A Lisbon museum devoted to the encounter between Portugal and Asia, with collections on the Portuguese presence in the East.

The Museu do Oriente explores five centuries of encounter between Portugal and Asia, from the Portuguese presence in the East to the arts of China, Japan and South-East Asia.
A museum of encounters
The museum belongs to the Fundacao Oriente and opened in 2008 in a converted industrial building on the Lisbon waterfront at Alcantara. Its collections were formed around the Kwok On collection of Asian performing arts, assembled in Macau and Paris before coming to Lisbon.
What to see
- The Kwok On collection of masks, puppets and costumes from across Asia.
- Chinese porcelain and export art made for European markets.
- Japanese namban art, produced during the first encounters between Japan and Europe.
- Temporary exhibitions, performances and a documentation centre.
Visiting the museum
The museum is at Avenida de Brasilia, Doca de Alcantara (Norte), 1350-352 Lisbon. Opening hours and tickets are published on the official website, so check before your visit.
