Streets that preserve stories of the land and the sea, historic façades, exotic gardens in the heart of the city, and people who keep Madeira’s identity alive through everyday traditions and gestures: on this Sunday tour of Funchal, the morning is dedicated to discovering some of the most emblematic landmarks of the archipelago’s capital, on a leisurely and engaging walk through its historic centre.

Starting from Rua do Sabão, the route leads us through squares, churches, gardens and streets where different periods of the city’s history continue to coexist. From Colombo Square to the Cathedral of Funchal, from the Municipal Garden to Rua da Carreira, from the Town Hall Square to the Jesuits’ College Church, each stop adds a new layer to the story of Funchal: its close relationship with the Atlantic, the presence of religious architecture, the character of its cobbled streets, and the vibrant life that animates its public spaces.

This Sunday tour of Funchal continues to the Old Town, one of the city’s most vibrant and historic areas, renowned for its painted doors and its unique traditional atmosphere. The experience concludes with a poncha-making workshop, bringing to the table one of the most recognisable expressions of Madeiran culture.

After the walk, it is time to make room for one of Madeira’s most recognisable (and delicious) traditions. In this poncha workshop, the island’s traditional drink is introduced through its authentic ingredients: locally produced sugar cane spirit, honey and freshly squeezed lemon juice.

Throughout the experience, you will learn how to prepare your own poncha. How do you achieve the perfect balance of acidity, sweetness and strength? There will be plenty of time to mix the ingredients, discuss the recipe, share first tasting impressions and hear stories about how this drink continues to bring people together in different moments of local life.

The tasting is accompanied by a selection of local cheeses and cured meats, creating a relaxed and flavourful finale to this Sunday stroll in Funchal.
