Its red lighthouse, the westernmost in Portugal, marks the edge of Europe&#8217;s island world and has become a place of pilgrimage for sunset watchers.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">History and identity<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The village grew from farming and fishing, on an isolated plateau where the land meets the sea. Its festivals are part of the island&#8217;s village calendar.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Nearby<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The natural pools and cliffs of <a href=\"https:\/\/realdreams.pt\/pt\/attractions-to-visit\/regions-of-portugal\/madeira-region\/madeira-island\/porto-moniz\/\" rel=\"noopener\">Porto Moniz<\/a> are a short drive north along the west coast.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Visiting Ponta do Pargo<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Ponta do Pargo is in the municipality of Calheta, on the west coast of Madeira, reached by road from Funchal.
