Between the keep and the ruins, it keeps the memory of a fortress that once guarded the border with Castile.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">The village<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Marialva was a stronghold of the defence of the Beira border, fought over in the wars of the Middle Ages and the Restoration. Inside the walls, the medieval village was gradually abandoned, and today its ruins \u2014 houses, cisterns and the old Jewish quarter \u2014 stand beside the keep; the town of today lives just outside the gate, around the church and the pillory.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">O que ver<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>The castle and its keep, above the old walled town.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>The ruins of the medieval village inside the walls.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>The devesas, the terraced fields along the river valley.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>The stone streets of the village outside the walls.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Visiting<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Marialva belongs to the municipality of M\u00eada, in the district of Guarda, and lies within reach of the motorway and the towns of the Beira Interior.
