The Reserva Natural do Estu\u00e1rio do Sado protects this landscape and its life: birds by the thousand, the last rice fields of the estuary and a community of bottlenose dolphins that lives here all year round, one of the few resident populations in Europe.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">The estuary<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The estuary is formed where the Sado meets the Atlantic, in a wide plain of mudflats and marshes between Set\u00fabal and the dunes of Tr\u00f3ia. The reserve was created to protect this transition between river and sea: the salt pans that have shaped the landscape for centuries, the rice fields of the lowlands, and the birds \u2014 flamingos, waders and herons \u2014 that stop here on the routes between Europe and Africa.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">What to see<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>The bottlenose dolphins of the estuary, seen on boat trips from Set\u00fabal.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>The salt pans and the rice fields of the plain.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>The birdlife of the marshes and sandbanks.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>The landscapes of the estuary, between the river and the Atlantic.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Visiting<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The estuary is explored from Set\u00fabal, where the boat trips to watch the dolphins leave from the riverside; the observation is done at a distance, following the rules that protect the animals and the reserve.
