Soluppgång på bergsryggen – kustvandring på Madeira

The Sunrise Ridge Coastal Hike is a full-day experience designed for confident hikers looking to explore one of Madeira’s most dramatic coastal ridges at first light.

The hike begins at sunrise overlooking the eastern peninsula, often referred to locally as the “Dragon’s Tail,” before continuing westward along exposed ridgelines above the Atlantic. The early start allows for cooler temperatures and changing light as the island comes to life.

The first section of the hike includes a sustained climb that sets the tone for the day. Once past this initial ascent, the route opens up to expansive views along the northeastern coastline as the trail gradually leads towards Porto da Cruz.

This is a lesser-known route with very few other hikers, offering a sense of space and isolation rarely found on Madeira’s more popular trails. Conditions, pace, and exact routing are adapted on the day to ensure safety and the best possible experience.
