Aveiro Delights: Discover the charm and flavours of Aveiro on foot

The Aveiro Delights Walking Tour is a unique experience that combines heritage, tradition and flavour in a guided walk through the heart of Aveiro. This tour was designed for those who want to truly get to know the city, beyond photographs and postcards, through its stories, its people and its flavours. We start at the Aveiro Salt Pans, one of the most striking elements of the local landscape and identity. Here, salt is produced by hand, as it has been for centuries, with techniques passed down from generation to generation. During the visit, you will understand the essential role of the salt pans in Aveiro’s economy and culture, as well as the life of the marnotos, the guardians of this ancestral craft.

Next, we head to the historic centre, where we will walk through the city’s charming streets. Along the way, you will have the chance to admire the beautiful Art Nouveau façades, a legacy of a period of great development and connection with Central Europe. Emblematic places such as Casa Major Pessoa and the Art Nouveau Museum building help tell the story of an elegant, cosmopolitan Aveiro. During the route, we cross the famous urban canals, where the traditional moliceiros sail, typical boats once used to collect moliço (a type of seaweed). These colourful boats, with their irreverent paintings, are today one of the city’s living postcards and give it a unique atmosphere that earned it the nickname “Portuguese Venice”. The highlight of the tour takes place at the Oficina do Doce, a space dedicated to preserving and sharing one of Aveiro’s greatest delicacies: Ovos Moles. This convent sweet, made only with egg yolks and sugar, is a symbol of the city and of national confectionery heritage. Here you will not only learn about its origin and making process, but also watch and even take part in its preparation. At the end, of course, there is a tasting of Ovos Moles, wrapped in the traditional wafer, with their unmistakable flavour. This tour is ideal for those looking for an authentic experience that blends the best of Portuguese culture, history and confectionery. A walk to keep in your memory, and on your palate.
