Its granite streets, its spa waters and its position between the high peaks make it one of the best bases for exploring Portugal&#8217;s highest mountain range.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">History and identity<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The village grew around its wool trade and its mountain pastures, and the glacial valley of the Z\u00eazere \u2014 one of the few in Portugal \u2014 shaped its landscape and its life. Its festivals follow the transhumance and the seasons of the serra.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Nearby<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The village is in the middle of the <a href=\"https:\/\/realdreams.pt\/sv\/attractions-to-visit\/regions-of-portugal\/center-of-portugal\/serra-da-estrela-natural-park-2\/\" rel=\"noopener\">Serra da Estrela naturpark<\/a>, between Seia and Covilh\u00e3.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Visiting Manteigas<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Manteigas is in the Serra da Estrela, in central Portugal, reached by road.
