Its fish halls fill early with the catch of the lagoon and the ocean, and its fruit and vegetable market carries the colours of the region \u2014 a morning ritual that has drawn visitors for generations.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">History and identity<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Olh\u00e3o grew from its fishing and canning industries, and its market, built in the early twentieth century, became the stage of that daily life. The city&#8217;s fishermen still work the Ria Formosa and the coast, and their catch arrives at the market halls each morning, in a tradition that has changed little in its essentials.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">What to find and discover<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>The fish halls, with the morning catch and shellfish of the Ria Formosa.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>The fruit and vegetable market, with local produce and citrus.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>The waterfront setting, with views over the lagoon and its islands.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>The atmosphere of a working Algarve town at its morning best.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Products and specialities<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The Ria Formosa provides clams, oysters, cockles and fish, while the land around Olh\u00e3o adds oranges, figs, almonds and carob. The market is the natural place to taste the region before discovering the lagoon itself.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Nearby<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The <a href=\"https:\/\/realdreams.pt\/sv\/attractions-to-visit\/regions-of-portugal\/algarve-region\/ria-formosa\/\" rel=\"noopener\">Ria Formosa naturpark<\/a> begins at the market&#8217;s doorstep, and the <a href=\"https:\/\/realdreams.pt\/sv\/attractions-to-visit\/regions-of-portugal\/algarve-region\/mercado-municipal-de-loule\/\" rel=\"noopener\">Mercado Municipal de Loul\u00e9<\/a> is another of the Algarve&#8217;s great markets.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Visiting<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The market is on the Olh\u00e3o waterfront, about 15 kilometres east of Faro, reached by road and rail.
