Azores expand Regional Network of Hiking Trails with New Routes

The Regional Network of Hiking Trails in the Azores is set to expand with the implementation of 14 new trails and the approval of three additional routes by the Hiking Trails Monitoring Committee (CAPP). With these additions, the archipelago strengthens its offerings for nature and adventure tourism enthusiasts.

Currently, the network includes 96 certified trails, covering a total of 838 km with proper signage. These trails adhere to international standards that ensure safety for hikers while promoting environmental preservation.

New trails in Terceira and São Jorge

Among the recent approvals, two new trails stand out on Terceira Island and one on São Jorge. On Terceira, the Lagoa do Cerro Trail, stretching 5.5 km, will offer a unique experience in a wetland area of high ecological interest, ideal for birdwatching, both local and migratory species. Meanwhile, the Ribeiras/Matas da Agualva Trail, approximately 8 km long, will provide an immersive journey through the region’s history and culture, passing by traditional water management structures such as mills and washhouses.

On São Jorge Island, the Grutões Trail, covering 6.5 km, has been approved. This route will take hikers to the iconic “Grutões” site and pass through the Fajã de São João, offering an authentic experience for seasoned trekkers. The trail follows the historic paths used by local communities in search of milder climates during winter.

Implementation and promotion of the new trails

The new trails are expected to be completed by the beginning of next year. The Regional Directorate of Tourism will be responsible for signage, installing information panels, and promoting the routes through the Azores Tourism Portal.

The Regional Secretary for Tourism, Berta Cabral, emphasized that this expansion aligns with the Azores Tourism Strategic and Marketing Plan (PEMTA 2030). “These developments enhance the destination’s quality by expanding and diversifying the region’s hiking trails,” she stated. She also highlighted that the Azores have been named the “World’s Best Adventure Tourism Destination” for two consecutive years, and the new trails contribute to reinforcing this status.

Hiking trails are among the archipelago’s main tourist attractions, offering an authentic experience that blends nature, culture, and history. Whether for visitors or residents, these routes provide a unique opportunity to explore the Azores’ distinctive beauty on foot, fostering a direct connection with nature and local heritage.
