Vouga Historical Train Returns This Summer

The train travels along the iconic Vouga Line, providing both locals and tourists a chance to explore the cultural and historical heritage of Portugal’s central-northern interior.

This July and August, the Vouga Historical Train will once again take travelers on a journey back in time through Portugal’s only remaining operational narrow-gauge railway line. In a joint initiative by CP – Comboios de Portugal, the Municipality of Águeda, and the Parish Council of Macinhata do Vouga, a total of nine Saturday departures are scheduled between July 5 and August 30.

This seasonal experience connects Aveiro to Macinhata do Vouga aboard an early 20th-century wooden carriage train, offering a rare glimpse into the golden era of railway travel.

A Cultural and Experience Onboard

Departing from Aveiro Station at 1:45 PM, passengers are welcomed with onboard entertainment, setting the tone for a nostalgic journey through lush landscapes. Upon arriving in Macinhata do Vouga, guests will be treated to a local pastry from Águeda and invited to browse a regional product fair featuring artisanal foods and crafts.

Visitors can also enjoy a guided tour of the Macinhata do Vouga Railway Museum, a site that celebrates the country’s rich railway legacy and showcases historic locomotives and equipment.

At 4:40 PM, the train resumes its journey towards Águeda, a city renowned for its colorful urban art installations. During the popular AgitÁgueda Art Festival (from July 5 to 27), travelers can immerse themselves in the city’s vibrant atmosphere, explore artistic exhibits, and participate in open-air activities scattered throughout the streets.

The return trip to Aveiro departs at 7:20 PM, with arrival expected at 8:07 PM, wrapping up an immersive day full of history, culture, and discovery.
