Esposende
Esposende has a long history that dates back to pre-Roman times, with evidence of human occupation at the Castro de São Lourenço, an ancient fortified settlement. During the Roman period, the proximity to the Cávado River and the Atlantic made the region a strategic point for navigation and trade.
During the Middle Ages, Esposende continued to grow as a small fishing village. In 1572, it was elevated to the status of a town by decree of King D. Sebastião, recognizing the economic importance of fishing and shipbuilding in the region. The port of Esposende played a central role in the export of agricultural products and salt. It was also significant in cod fishing.
In the 19th century, Esposende became an important center for maritime trade. However, the construction of larger ports nearby led to a decline in this activity. Nevertheless, the city maintained its connection to the sea and fishing. These still play an important role in the local economy today.
In 1993, Esposende was elevated to city status. Today, this town in the Braga district is known for its beaches, natural and historical heritage, making it a popular destination for beach and cultural tourism.
