Azores | Santa Maria Island, what’s it like to visit?

Santa Maria Island, the southernmost in the Azores, is small but filled with remarkable contrasts – from towering waterfalls and volcanic rock formations to red deserts and tranquil bays. It’s also one of the top spots in Europe to observe majestic manta rays and elusive whale sharks, offering a truly unique experience for nature and adventure lovers alike.

Throughout this episode, the journey unfolds on Santa Maria Island, the southernmost island of the Azores. Despite its small size, the island offers a rich blend of natural beauty, geological uniqueness, and cultural charm.

The exploration includes several of the island’s most iconic locations. One of the highlights is the Bay of São Lourenço, a picturesque, amphitheater-shaped bay surrounded by terraced vineyards and crystal-clear waters. It’s a perfect setting for taking in the peaceful coastal scenery.

Another remarkable stop is the Aveiro Waterfall, one of the tallest waterfalls in Portugal, cascading from lush, green cliffs. The journey continues to the Calçada dos Gigantes, also known as the Ribeira do Maloás – a rare geological formation of columnar basalt, resembling a giant’s staircase carved in stone.

The route also includes the Poço da Pedreira, a former quarry now transformed into a quiet, reflective lagoon with dramatic rock walls. Not far from there lies the Pedreira do Campo, a site of immense geological interest where fossilized marine organisms are embedded in ancient volcanic rock.

At the island’s highest point, Pico Alto, visitors find sweeping views and historical significance, as it was the site of the most serious aviation accident ever recorded in Portugal.

One of Santa Maria’s most unique landscapes is the Barreiro da Faneca, often referred to as the Red Desert for its arid appearance and deep red clay soils – a rare sight in the typically green Azorean scenery.

Due to a cancelled flight and delayed luggage, no nautical activities could be carried out during this visit. However, Santa Maria is considered one of the best places in Europe to observe manta rays and whale sharks, and visitors are strongly encouraged to take part in snorkeling or diving experiences when possible.
