Bom Jesus do Monte – Braga | Portugal

Rising above the hills of Braga, the Sanctuary of Bom Jesus do Monte is one of Portugal’s most iconic pilgrimage sites — and a masterpiece of Baroque and Neoclassical design.

This Catholic sanctuary, elevated to a minor basilica in 2015, is known for its monumental zigzagging staircase representing the Via Sacra (Stations of the Cross), flanked by chapels, fountains, and symbolic statues. The climb, whether physical or spiritual, culminates at the summit with sweeping views over Braga and the serene Bom Jesus Park.

The complex also features a historic funicular — the oldest water-powered elevator still in operation — charming woodland trails, and heritage hotels, making it not only a sacred site but also a destination of reflection, nature, and peace.

Its architectural influence crossed borders, inspiring other sanctuaries such as Nossa Senhora dos Remédios in Lamego, and Bom Jesus de Matosinhos in Congonhas, Brazil.

Whether you go by foot or funicular, Bom Jesus invites you to pause, breathe, and rise — in every sense.
