Historical Villages – Piodão | Portugal
Tucked away in the mountains, Piódão is a fairytale-like village of slate houses and narrow winding paths. A timeless gem in the heart of Serra do Açor.
Nestled on the slopes of the Serra do Açor, Piódão is often called “the hidden village” — and with good reason. Its remote location and harmonious architecture make it one of the most picturesque and well-preserved historical villages in Portugal.
The houses, built entirely from local schist stone with wooden doors painted in bright blue, form a beautiful contrast against the green backdrop of the surrounding mountains. At night, the warm yellow lighting makes the village look like something out of a storybook.
Despite its small size, Piódão has a rich history, having served as a refuge for monks and even fugitives throughout the centuries due to its secluded position. The village’s centerpiece is the whitewashed Church of Nossa Senhora da Conceição, which stands out against the darker tones of the slate buildings. Visitors can stroll through the cobbled alleys, discover traditional craftsmanship, and enjoy regional specialties such as honey, chestnuts, and local liqueurs.
Piódão offers a peaceful escape into Portugal’s rural past — quiet, magical, and utterly unforgettable.
