Tomar and the Knights Templar of Portugal
Visiting Tomar Portugal
The Castle of the Templars in Tomar, built in 1160, is one of Portugal’s most iconic fortresses. Strategically located on a hill overlooking the Nabão River, the castle was commissioned by Gualdim Pais, master of the Order of the Templars, to protect the region from Moorish attacks.
The fortification stands out for its blend of Romanesque and Gothic architecture, also symbolizing the Templar influence in the country. Within its walls lies the Convent of Christ, a UNESCO World Heritage site, famous for the Charola.
