The Azores are currently one of the world’s largest whale sanctuaries. Between resident and migratory species, common or rare, more than 20 different types of cetaceans are sighted in its waters. The number is impressive and corresponds to one third of all existing species. This is an ecosystem with unique characteristics, with the presence of majestic whales and friendly dolphins.

Terceira island, more specifically the historic city of Angra do Heroísmo, is a perfect natural aquarium for cetacean watching. Thanks to the high flow of food, and because our coastal zone has no continental shelf, the water becomes very deep even close to the shore, which makes it a hallmark destination for cetaceans. With a very high sighting rate of up to 90%, Terceira has become the island of choice for seeing them.
