Discover the geological marvels of São Miguel on this unforgettable tour to Furnas, one of the island’s most iconic destinations. From bubbling fumaroles and volcanic landscapes to lush botanical gardens and Europe’s only tea plantation, this tour offers an immersive experience of nature, culture, and gastronomy.
Our journey begins along the south coast, where we take in the stunning contrast between volcanic beaches and the crystal-clear waters of the Atlantic. Our first stop is Vila Franca do Campo, the island’s oldest capital, where we admire the famous islet of Vila Franca—a volcanic crater turned into a natural lagoon, classified as a Protected Habitat and Species Management Area. This breathtaking spot is also the stage for the Red Bull Cliff Diving competition.
Before continuing to Furnas, we visit the Nossa Senhora da Paz viewpoint, offering a panoramic view over Vila Franca do Campo and its islet, a sight that captures the beauty of the Azorean coastline.
As we descend into the heart of the volcano, we arrive at the Furnas Lagoon, where one of the island’s most traditional and unique dishes is prepared—Cozido das Furnas.
This hearty volcanic stew is a rich combination of beef, pork, chicken, chorizo, black pudding, potatoes, sweet potatoes, carrots, cabbage, kale, and yams, slow-cooked underground for six hours using the natural heat of the volcanic earth. After witnessing the cooking process, we head to a local restaurant for a delicious tasting of this traditional dish.

After lunch, we explore the incredible landscapes of Furnas, with the option to visit:

• Parque Terra Nostra, one of the most famous botanical gardens in Europe, featuring exotic plant species and a natural thermal pool rich in minerals, perfect for a rejuvenating dip.
• Caldeiras das Furnas, a mesmerizing area of fumaroles, boiling mud pools, and mineral-rich hot springs, showcasing the island’s volcanic activity up close.
• Ribeira Quente Waterfall, a hidden gem where nature’s beauty unfolds in a cascade of fresh waters.

Before leaving Furnas, we stop at the Pico do Ferro viewpoint, offering a spectacular panoramic view over the Furnas caldera and its surrounding lush landscape.

Continuing towards the north coast, we visit the only tea plantation in Europe, where you can enjoy a freshly brewed cup of Azorean tea while admiring rolling green hills and breathtaking ocean views.
Our final stop is at the Santa Iria Viewpoint, offering one of the most stunning coastal panoramas on the island, where the dramatic cliffs and deep blue waters of the Atlantic create a truly unforgettable scene.
