As one of the Azores&#8217; regional museums, it gathers history, ethnography and maritime heritage, including the story of the submarine telegraph cables that once made Horta a hub of transatlantic communications.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">A museum of the Atlantic<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The museum was created in 1977 and installed in the former Jesuit college beside the church of the Sant\u00edssimo Salvador. Its collections cover the history of the islands, traditional crafts and technologies, sacred art and the port of Horta, which served as a vital stop for ships crossing the Atlantic.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">What to see<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Objects linked to the port of Horta and the submarine cable stations that operated here.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Ethnography, traditional crafts and the technologies of linen, wool and ceramics.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>A collection of objects carved in fig pith, unique in the world.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Sacred art, paintings, photographs and historical documents.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Visiting the museum<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The museum is at Pal\u00e1cio do Col\u00e9gio, Largo Duque d&#8217;\u00c1vila e Bolama, 9900-141 Horta.
