Sheltered by green hills and close to the famous Furnas valley, it is a quiet town with deep roots.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">History and identity<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Povoa\u00e7\u00e3o was the first settlement of S\u00e3o Miguel, founded in the 1430s, and served as the island&#8217;s early administrative centre. Its name \u2014 &#8220;settlement&#8221; \u2014 recalls that origin, and the town keeps the atmosphere of the old Azorean villages, with its churches and its views over the sea.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">What to see and do<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>The town centre, with its churches and old houses.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>The viewpoints over the coast and the green hills.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>The nearby Furnas valley, with its hot springs and lake.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>The coastal roads and small beaches of the south-east.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Gastronomy and traditions<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Povoa\u00e7\u00e3o shares the flavours of S\u00e3o Miguel \u2014 fresh fish, local beef and the famous Furnas stew, cooked in the volcanic ground of the nearby valley \u2014 and its festivals, with their processions and music, are part of the Azorean calendar.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Nearby<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The council includes the valley of Furnas, with the <a href=\"https:\/\/realdreams.pt\/zh\/attractions-to-visit\/regions-of-portugal\/azores-region\/lagoa-das-furnas\/\" rel=\"noopener\">Lagoa das Furnas<\/a>\u3001 <a href=\"https:\/\/realdreams.pt\/zh\/attractions-to-visit\/regions-of-portugal\/azores-region\/parque-terra-nostra\/\" rel=\"noopener\">Parque Terra Nostra<\/a> and the thermal springs of <a href=\"https:\/\/realdreams.pt\/zh\/attractions-to-visit\/regions-of-portugal\/azores-region\/caldeira-velha\/\" rel=\"noopener\">Caldeira Velha<\/a>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Visiting Povoa\u00e7\u00e3o<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Povoa\u00e7\u00e3o is on the south-east coast of S\u00e3o Miguel, about 60 kilometres from Ponta Delgada, reached by road.
