Chartered in the seventeenth century, it remains a great gathering of the Alentejo, bringing together commerce, food and the traditions of the plain.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">History and identity<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The fair was established by royal charter in 1620, and for generations it was the great market of the region \u2014 where farmers traded livestock, cloth and tools for the winter, and where people from the Alentejo and the Algarve met at the edge of the town. Its site, the Largo da Feira, still holds the same role today.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">What to find and discover<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Stalls of regional products, crafts and household goods.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Food and drink of the Alentejo, from grilled meats to sweets.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Music, entertainment and the atmosphere of a country fair.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>The old fairground and the white town of Castro Verde beside it.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Products and specialities<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The fair is a showcase of the Baixo Alentejo \u2014 olive oil, cheeses, honey, smoked meats and the region&#8217;s sweets \u2014 in the heart of the steppe country of Castro Verde.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Nearby<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The fairground adjoins the town of <a href=\"https:\/\/realdreams.pt\/zh\/attractions-to-visit\/regions-of-portugal\/alentejo-region\/castro-verde\/\" rel=\"noopener\">Castro Verde<\/a>, and the walled town of <a href=\"https:\/\/realdreams.pt\/zh\/attractions-to-visit\/regions-of-portugal\/alentejo-region\/serpa\/\" rel=\"noopener\">Serpa<\/a> is a short drive east.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Visiting<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The Feira de Castro is traditionally held over the third weekend of October, on days that vary from year to year.
