But beyond the song lies a working Alentejo town at the edge of the cork forests \u2014 patient, plain-spoken and quietly beautiful.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Cork, mines and a banned song<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The town grew around the cork-oak montado, the managed landscape that makes Portugal the world&#8217;s leading cork producer; roughly half of the municipality is cork forest. The railway arrived in 1861 and brought a cork-boiling boom, while the Lousal pyrite mine, worked from 1900 to 1988, built a whole company village that is now a mining museum. In the 1960s Jos\u00e9 Afonso sang here a song about a town where the people rule \u2014 banned by the dictatorship, and unforgettable ever since.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">What to see<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>The cork-oak hills of the Serra de Gr\u00e2ndola<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>The Lousal Mine museum village<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>The railway station, with its azulejo panels<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Pra\u00e7a Marqu\u00eas de Pombal and the parish church<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>The road to Melides and the lagoons of the coast<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Practical information<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Gr\u00e2ndola sits on the A2 motorway about an hour and a half south of Lisbon, with its own station on the Lisbon\u2013Algarve line.
