Inside, the authentic royal apartments of the 19th century survive almost untouched, from the Throne Room to the private rooms of King Lu\u00eds and Queen Maria Pia.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">The court of the last kings<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Works began under Queen Maria I \u2014 slow, interrupted by the French invasions and the civil wars, and never fully completed: the palace you visit is roughly a third of what was planned. It is also astonishingly rich: the only painting by El Greco in Portugal, the gold and silver of the Royal Table, tapestries, sculpture and the private chapel, alongside the Royal Library of Ajuda with some 150,000 volumes. Above the Tagus, the palace pairs naturally with the museums of the Bel\u00e9m riverside \u2014 the <a href=\"https:\/\/realdreams.pt\/zh\/attractions-to-visit\/regions-of-portugal\/lisbon-surroundings\/museu-nacional-de-etnologia\/\">National Museum of Ethnology<\/a> \u4e0e <a href=\"https:\/\/realdreams.pt\/zh\/attractions-to-visit\/regions-of-portugal\/lisbon-surroundings\/museu-nacional-do-azulejo\/\">National Tile Museum<\/a> across the old town.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">What to see<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>The state rooms and the Throne Room<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>The El Greco painting and the Royal Table silver<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>The private apartments of the royal family<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>The chapel and the library of Ajuda<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>The gardens descending towards Bel\u00e9m<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Practical information<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The palace stands at Largo da Ajuda, a short bus or tram ride from the centre. It opens from Thursday to Tuesday, 10.00\u201318.00 (last admission 17.15), closed on Wednesdays; occasional unscheduled closures occur for conservation works.
