Museu de Arte Contemporânea de Elvas
Contemporary art in a historic building in Elvas, built around the António Cachola Collection.

In the heart of the fortified town of Elvas, the Museu de Arte Contemporânea de Elvas (MACE) brings Portuguese contemporary art into a historic setting. Its displays are built around the António Cachola Collection, one of the most important private collections of Portuguese art of recent decades.
A collection in the old town
MACE opened in 2007 and has become a reference for contemporary art in the Alentejo, combining the António Cachola Collection with a programme of temporary exhibitions. The museum occupies a historic building in the old town, a short walk from the aqueduct and the town’s other monuments.
What to see
- Works from the António Cachola Collection, covering Portuguese art from the 1980s onwards.
- A changing programme of temporary exhibitions.
- The contrast between contemporary works and the historic building in the old town.
Visiting the museum
The museum is in the historic centre of Elvas, a UNESCO World Heritage site. Opening hours are published by the municipality, so check the official website before your visit.
