Mercado Municipal de Loulé

A covered market and famous Saturday fair in the Algarve, with fresh produce, crafts and local life.

The municipal market of Loulé

In the heart of Loulé, the municipal market is the stage of one of the liveliest weekly fairs in the Algarve. With roots in the town’s medieval charters, it fills the market building and the surrounding streets with fresh produce, seafood, sweets, handicrafts and the voices of traders from the surrounding countryside.

History and identity

Loulé has held its market for centuries — an old privilege of the town that shaped its trade and its daily life. The covered market of today grew from that tradition, and the Saturday fair remains the great weekly gathering of the inland Algarve, part commerce, part social ritual.

What to find and discover

  • The produce halls: fruit, vegetables, dried fruit and local specialities.
  • The fish and meat halls, with the morning catch and regional products.
  • The Saturday street fair, with crafts, ceramics and household goods.
  • The bustling town around the market, with its castle and old streets.

Products and specialities

The market is known for Algarve produce — citrus, figs, almonds, carob and honey — as well as local sausages, cheeses and sweets. The town itself is famed for its carnival and for the crafts sold at the fair.

Nearby

The market stands beside the old town of Loulé, and the fish market of Olhão is a short drive away on the coast.

Visiting

The market is in the centre of Loulé, about 15 kilometres inland from Faro, reached by road. The halls work daily and the great fair fills the town on Saturdays; check with the municipality before your visit.
