Monchique
A mountain town in the Algarve, set in the wooded Serra de Monchique with its thermal springs.

Above the Algarve coast, in the wooded Serra de Monchique, the town of Monchique is a world away from the beaches. Its cool mountain air, its thermal springs and its views over the coast make it a favourite escape, and the surrounding hills are full of walking trails.
History and identity
The town grew up in the mountains, sheltered from the coast, and its spa at Caldas de Monchique has been used since Roman times. The surrounding forests, with their cork oaks and pines, have shaped the life of the community for centuries.

Gastronomy and traditions
Monchique is known for its medronho — a spirit distilled from the fruit of the strawberry tree — and for the mountain cuisine of the Algarve, with its smoked meats and honey. The town’s festivals are part of the calendar of the serra.
