Museu Municipal de Tavira
Tavira’s municipal museum, in the Palácio da Galeria, with archaeology, history and contemporary exhibitions.

Tavira’s municipal museum is spread across several historic buildings in the town, with the Palácio da Galeria as its main venue. Its exhibitions move between archaeology, history and contemporary art, making it a good starting point for understanding one of the Algarve’s most elegant towns.
A museum in the old town
The Palácio da Galeria, a classified civil building on the slope above the river, houses the museum’s temporary exhibitions. Other nuclei include the Islamic collection, which reflects Tavira’s importance during the Islamic period, and the Ermida de São Roque, used for exhibitions and events.
What to see
- The Palácio da Galeria, with its painted ceilings and temporary exhibitions.
- The Islamic nucleus, with finds from Tavira’s Islamic past.
- Archaeological collections from the town and the surrounding area.
- Guided tours in English, offered on selected exhibitions.
Visiting the museum
The museum’s main venue is the Palácio da Galeria, in the historic centre of Tavira. Tickets cost 2 euros for a single nucleus or 3 euros for the Palácio da Galeria and the Islamic nucleus combined, with reductions for students and seniors.
