Herdade do Esporão

A historic wine estate of the Alentejo, with vineyards, olive groves and a medieval tower.

The Herdade do Esporão estate

In the wide plains of the Alentejo, near Monsaraz, the Herdade do Esporão is one of the great estates of Portuguese wine. Vineyards and olive groves spread around its medieval tower, and the estate has become a reference of wine tourism — a place to see how the wines and oils of the region are made, from the vine to the glass.

History and character

The estate is documented since the thirteenth century, when its lands and the Torre do Esporão — the spur tower that gave the herdade its name — already marked this corner of the plain. Over the centuries it passed through noble hands, and in recent decades it was reborn as a modern wine and olive oil estate, opened to visitors.
