Museu José Régio

The house-museum of the writer José Régio in Portalegre, with his collections of religious art and popular objects.

The Jose Regio house-museum in Portalegre

The Museu José Régio preserves the house in Portalegre where the writer José Régio lived and assembled one of the most personal collections in Portugal. Rooms filled with religious sculpture, popular art and objects of daily life give an unusual portrait of a poet’s mind.

A poet’s house

José Régio (1901-1969) was one of the leading Portuguese writers of the twentieth century, and he spent many years in Portalegre as a teacher. His house, with its collections of religious figures, ceramics, paintings and curiosities, became a museum after his death, preserving both the man and his enthusiasms.

What to see

  • The writer’s study and personal library.
  • Religious sculpture and popular devotional objects.
  • Ceramics, paintings and decorative arts.
  • Objects of popular art and daily life from the Alentejo.
